Raider Golfers win TVC tourney by one stroke

The course . . . the weather . . . the competition . . . all combine to make the game of golf interesting. The Lawrence-Nelson High School golf team mastered all of them last week in a trip to Franklin for the Twin Valley Conference Golf Tournament. They came home with the championship plaque which they proudly hold in a group picture. Members of the Raider team pictured are Mr. Niederklein, Hayden Mazour, Carson Vaughn, Jacob Kathman, Bayln Bargen, Clay Williams, Connor Janda, Cody Brockman, Caden Culbertson, Cole Thompson, Nathan Pofahl.

The game of golf can be a frustrating experience, as anyone who has played it well knows. One stroke can often make the difference in the game.

One stroke, however, is what made the L-N High School Raiders the champions of the Twin Valley Conference Golf Tournament last week. The event was played in Franklin.

The Raider team put together an 18 hole total of 375 for the honor of being the TVC champs. Red Cloud was second with a total of 376; Deshler had 287; Silver Lake 429; Blue Hill 431 and Franklin 447.

It's probably hard to pinpoint one stroke in this event that helped the team to the victory. However, most all players put together an improved game on the back nine holes. That was something most teams also did, but the Raiders did their just a little better.

Scoring for the five Raider varsity players were: Connor Janda 87, Bayln Bargen 93, Jacob Kathman 97, Carson Vaughn 98 and Clay Williams 111.

Gregory Boettcher of Franklin and Lukas Armstrong of Red Cloud had low scores of the day with an 82 and 83 respectively.

The tournament also included the J V event. L-N was the only school able to field a full team for the J V. Golfing for the L-N team were: Cody Brockman 98, Hayden Mazour 108, Caden Culbertson 54 (9 holes only), Nathan Pofahl 57 (9 holes only), and Cole Thompson 112.

The team returned to Franklin on May 7 and went to Thayer Central on May 8 before the Districts on May 13 and 14.
