Vestey Festival this week

It’s almost time for the 32nd annual Victorian Festival honoring Lady Evelyn (Brodstone) Vestey. The festival has become a Memorial Weekend tradition in Superior.

The events are still somewhat in tradition with some being added and others taken away.

The Grill Games originally planned for the Superior Country Club on Friday evening will not be held but a walking tour of historic Superior has been added.

There will be a free movie Friday night at the Crest for the first 75 patrons. The Garfield Movie will be playing on the big screen Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday’s events begin with two breakfast events. Centennial Lutheran Church will be serving at the church from 7 to 9 a.m. Grace Community Free Church will be serving in the Vestey Center Coffee Shop from 8 to 11 a.m.

The FFA petting zoo will be open on the Ideal Title lot from 8 to 10.

Brodstone Healthcare will sponsor a bicycle rodeo at 9 a.m. at Fourth and Central.

An old western movie “High Noon” will be shown at the Crest starting at 9 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. Cinema 2 will be playing cartoons. An admission fee will not be charged.

Traditionally, the parade is the most popular part of the festival and it is scheduled to move down Central Avenue starting at 10:30 a.m.

There will be an antique car display on Fourth Street after the parade. Nuckolls County Rodeo Queens are scheduled to be in the parade and available for autographs.

Rock-It Events will be bringing a number of carnival type activities which will be open on Commercial Street from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be a free watermelon feed at noon along with other entertainment activities on Central Avenue. One of those activities will be a turtle race. A professional turtle handler has been contracted to bring 40 racing turtles.

At 12:30 Beverly Beavers will lead a walking tour of historical Superior. The tour departing from the Vestey Center will cover 16 blocks and take about a half-hour which will be only a small portion of Superior. Participants will receive a recently completed historical tour booklet and map so they may on their own take the complete historical tour of Superior.

Starting at 1 p.m a western movie will be shown at the Crest.

There will be an alumni and friends social behind the Superior Chamber of Commerce office from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Nuckolls County Historical Society Museum will have extended hours throughout the weekend and special activities including living history demonstrations. It was 50 years ago this June that the Great Plains shortline railroad linking Superior and Seward began operation in Superior. James Reisdorff and Richard Schmeling will make a presentation on the history of the railroad starting at 1:30 p.m. in the museum’s Pioneer Hall.

At 3 p.m. Liz Ginther will present a live portrayal of Lady Vestey in the museum church. A Victorian tea will be held in Pioneer Hall starting at 3:30 p.m.

42 Wealth is sponsoring a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Superior Estates Winery.

The Superior 3000 Foundation will present the Entrepreneur of the Year Award to Steve and Angela Henderson.

Throughout the day on Saturday the Market will be open in Superior Auditorium but all of the vendors will be cleared out in time for a dance from 8 to midnight.

There will be an open house with root beer floats from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Simic Roller Skating Rink.

Sunday’s events include a church service sponsored by Harvest Christian Church at the City Park Band Stand starting at 10:30 a.m.

At noon brats and burgers will be served in the park by Brodstone Healthcare and the historical society. The museum will be open from 1 to 5 on Sunday.

Sunday afternoon starting at 2 Randy Sauce will present a musical concert at the band shell.
