Sesquicentennial Fourth of July planned in Jewell

“We Have a Story to Tell”! In 1870 there was a celebration at Fort Jewell on the Fourth of July. The group, several were Civil War veterans, was celebrating the anniversary of the birth of the United States. But pertinent to the settlers, they were celebrating the “departure of the Indians.” They moved out of the protection of Fort Jewell and celebrated!

That long-ago buffalo barbeque was presided over by Col E. Barker. An oration was given by W. R. Phillips and J. C. Postelthwaite led the group in the first public prayer in Jewell County. Likely a welcome part of the festivities were the cakes and rolls provided by the “ladies of Clyde and Lake Sibley” from Cloud County.

In 2020, Jewell residents and friends are moving out of the protection of “stay at home” and are celebrating their history and the Independence of the United States. #JoinUsInJewell!

Jewell’s Sesquicentennial Fourth will begin with fireworks at Lake Emerson on Friday, July 3. There will be food and vendors as well as the fireworks display in the evening.

On Saturday, the Fourth of July, there will be a meal beginning at 5 p.m. on the northeast side of Maag Park in Jewell. At 8 p.m., Kill Creek Rising will play for a free street dance.

A patriotic community worship service in Maag Park at 7 p.m. on Sunday July 5, will conclude the festivities. There will be more information forthcoming about these events. Just remember, #JoinUsInJewell on July 3rd, 4th and 5th for a Sesquicentennial Fourth of July.
