Superior VFD planning for July 4 show

Fourth of July will be a bit different this year in Nuckolls County.

The big events generally held in Superior and Nelson have been scaled back but not eliminated.

"Sure wish I could go swimming." This photograph from the files of The Superior Express shows water in the swimming pool. This year there is no water in the Superior Public Swimming pool because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even swimming at Lovewell Lake is forbidden this July 4 Independence Day because of blue-green algae blooms which are toxic.

Nelson will have a Road Rally on Saturday and golf tournaments on Sunday but the fireworks show and assortment of games normally held are not scheduled this year.

The Lovewell State Park Fireworks Show normally held on an evening near the Fourth of July has been rescheduled for Labor Day weekend.

In Superior the annual fireworks show coordinated by the Superior Volunteer Fire Department will be held at Brodstone Memorial Field at dusk Saturday but visitors will not be allowed inside the field's fence. Because of the need for social distancing, those planning on watching the show will need to do so from their motor vehicles or those who live in the right place, their front porch. The wearing of face masks is encouraged.

The Superior Joggers will not hold their annual Firekracker Run but there will be a concert in City Park starting at 11 a.m. The music will be provided by Steve Desmond.

A free-will donation barbeque will follow.

For those wanting to attend the concert but afraid to mix with other attendees, the concert will be broadcast on FM 88.5.
