Jewell County Hospital board accepts county's offer for clinic deadline

The Jewell County Commisioners met Aug. 31 at 8:30 a.m. Commissioners Mark Fleming, Steve Greene and Keith Roe were present. Carla J. Waugh, county clerk was also preent.

For the office head meeting, the following were present; Don Jacobs, sheriff; Anna Porter, county appraiser; Travis Garst, solid waste director; Amanda Davis, register of deeds; Kevin Peroutek, noxious weed director, emergency preparedness director and 911 coordinator; Nancy Marihugh, health administrator and Carla J. Waugh, county clerk. Those absent were Shannon Meier, ambulance director; Chris Petet, custodian; Brenda Eakins, treasurer and Joel Elkins, general superintendent.

Travis Garst, solid waste director, said he was able to market some recycling items. He said they are working on the C&D pit preparing for roofing material disposal.

Anna Porter, County Appraiser, said they are 75 percent complete with yearly inspection. She said the office was scheduled for a software conversion, but it has been delayed for a year.

Amanda Davis, register of deeds, said she interviewed applicants the prior week for the deputy register of deeds position.

Kevin Peroutek, noxious weed director, said he has been spraying when possible. He reported that chemical sales are down this year. Peroutek said he addressed some of the noxious weed complaints. He reported for the emergency management department and said they are currently waiting for Spark Funds approval. They are also waiting for approval on the digital message boards.

Nancy Marihugh, health administrator, said they dealt with five COVID-19 cases in August with all recovered. She said they are currently working with some individuals in quarantine. Marihugh discussed the school safety inspection that was conducted. She said the department is working with the school district on an immunization policy. Marihugh said for flu shots, it is suggested to start around the first of October. The health department will require an appointment to come into the office. Walk-ins will not be allowed because of the COVID-19 safety precautions.

Don Jacobs, sheriff, said they have had one inmate this month. He said they handed out pencils to students on the first day of school. Jacobs reported he has one new deputy starting and another deputy is scheduled to start at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center next month.

Steve Greene reported the commissioners canvassed for the primary election and held the budget hearing in August. He said he attended the juvenile detention center meeting. He viewed roads on a Saturday and attended the hospital board meeting. Greene said the hospital board accepted the county’s offer for the clinic building.

Joe Cheek, All States Home Improvement, inquired about the landfill being open on Mondays for disposal of roof materials.

Joel Elkins, general superintendent, discussed items sold at the consignment auction on Sunday. He reported several compliments on road maintenance and discussed a tube that is exposed and damaged as well as other road maintenance issues.

Darrell Miller, county attorney, telephoned to discuss the process for the transfer of the clinc building from the hospital to the Jewell County Health Department.
