Post Rock Extension District 2021 wheat demonstration plots

November 5, 2020

Post Rock Extension District recently drilled the wheat demonstration test plot. Pictured are long time cooperator, Calvin Bohnert, and Eric Mitchell and Don Wick, volunteers.

Thanks to producers in the Post Rock Extension District for serving as cooperators for the 2021 wheat demonstration plots, the district will have five wheat demonstration plots, one in each of the counties, including the K-State Research and Extension replicated plot in Mitchell County.

With all the different cropping enterprises of the cooperators, there are several planting dates which will be a test in itself. Most of the locations were planted behind soybeans except one that was fallow ground. Planting dates ranged from Oct. 7 in Osborne County and Oct. 15 in Jewell County to Oct. 21 in Lincoln and Mitchell counties and Oct. 22 in Smith County. The cooperators include Calvin Bohnert (Jewell Co.); Brady Coover (Lincoln Co.); Marty Fletchall (Mitchell Co.); Kelsey Remus (Osborne Co.) and David and Kaid Sasse (Smith Co.).

The Mitchell County plot also has some additional research including a seed quality study that's comparing different seed cleaning methods and then with and without seed treatment. Another study includes looking at five different management strategies including different seeding rates, fertility and fungicide treatments. Additional nitrogen or sulfur studiesmay have been implemented in the plots .

As shown by the accompanying photos, a variety of equipment was used when planting.
