After taking a year off, people were ready to get out and enjoy the July 4th weekend. Most of the events were held on Saturday. There were two golf tournaments on Sunday at the Elk Creek Country Club.

Saturday morning started out with the Fun-Walk-Bike Run. This year we had a few kids who rode their bikes. Riding their bikes for one mile were: first place, Jace Hoelting; second place, Joel Hoelting; third place, Jarett Hoelting; and fourth place, Bryson Clements (their cousin).

The winner of the one mile walk-run was Collins Porter. Collins is the granddaughter of Doug and Connie Porter. The winner of the two mile walk-run was Micki Jacobitz. The winner of the three mile was Ayden West.

Also during this time, people could go to the picnic shelter for breakfast. There was a choice of sausage gravy with biscuits, breakfast burrito, fruit, and cinnamon rolls. This cooks did a wonderful job!

Washer Boards followed, starting at 9:30 a.m., with 24 teams participating. Some of the matches took some time to play because the teams were working so hard to get to 21 points. We also had a wide range of ages of people playing this year. Winners of the washer boards were: first place, Judy Schroer and Kevin Schroer; second place, Joel DeLoen and Michael Porter; third place Sean and Mackenzie Trumble.

The next event in the park was the kids' games. The kids competed in a jumping bag race, 3-legged race, scavenger hunt and finding coins in the sane. All of the kids looked like they were having a lot of fun.

The Sacred Heart Alter Society served the lunch at noon. They served sloppy joes, hot dogs, ice cream sundays, and more.

Following lunch was the sand volleyball tournament. Eight teams came to play all afternoon. The winners were first place – Team USA – Decker and Lisa Brown, Scott and Paige Hild, Ryan and Jaycee Schroer; second place - Frahm Bombers – Morgan Frahm, Shane Frahm, Teresa Frahm, Parrish Prahm Ben Meyers, Stella Frahm, Payton Frahm; third place - Stars & Stripes – Travisand Sara Griffs, Trevor and Molly Kucera, Phil and Michelle Janda, Blake Janda and Allison Miller.

While the sand volleyball tournament was going on, there was also a free swim at the Nelson Swimming Pool from 1 to 5 p.m. The card board boat races began after that. There were nine entries, so they had two races. The winners of the first race were: first place, Devin Pofahl; second place, Stella Frahm. The winners of the second race were: first place, Soren Frahm; and second place, Carson Kutay.

The Nelson Volunteer Fire Department sponsored the hamburger feed at the picnic shelter. People stayed afterwards and played Bingo. The Nelson American Legion Auxiliary hosted this event.

The Elk Creek Country Club helped with the beer garden, and Royce Schott provided the music.

The final event of the evening was the fireworks display that started around 10 p.m.
