Lady Raiders lose two games in Holiday Tournament

The fast pace of the basketball game doesn't always allow for proper form . . . so you do what works at that time. Above, Emma Epley handles the ball with one hand as she gets ready to pass the ball to a teammate in the game against Hershey High School. (Photo courtesy of Denise Mazour.)

"Go west young lady . . ." never seemed to catch on the same way the phrase worked for young men. And . . . in this year's High School basketball season for the L-N High School Lady Raiders, it did not work at all.

The Lady Raiders went west to Hershey, Nebraska to play a couple of games in their Holiday Tournament and came home with two losses to add to their record. The opponents were from larger classes, but the Lady Raiders just could not keep up. The game summaries:

L-N – HERSHEY: 30-59: L-N went toe-to-toe with class C-1 Hershey for the first half of the first period with scores by Aleah Heikkinen, Emma Epley and Emily Troudt. However, a cold spell during the end of each of the first and second periods gave Hershey a large lead.

A spark seemed to return for L-N early in the third period as Aleah scored three times. But the effort was not a long term come-back plan.

Katelyn Mazour led the Raiders in scoring with ten points via 2-5 three-point shooting and 4-6 at the charity stripe. Emma led the team in rebounds with 5, Aleah had the most assists with 3 and Elsa had the most steals with 3.

(Scoring, rebounds, assists): Sydney Biltoft 2, 2, 0: Claire Himmelberg 3, 2, 0; Aleah Heikkinen 8, 2, 3; Emily Troudt 2, 3, 0; Elsa Jorgensen 2, 2, 0; Emma Epley 3, 5, 2; Katelyn Mazour 10, 2, 1; Kylie Beard 0, 2, 1; Kara Menke 0, 3, 1.

Three points shots: L-N: 3-17: Katelyn 2-5, Aleah 1-2; Hershey: 6-20.

Free Throws: L-N: 5-11: Katelyn 4-6, Emma 1-2; Hershey: 9-12.

Fouls: L-N: 8; Hershey: 13.

L-N – GERING: 20-56: On the second day of the tournament, the Lady Raiders played up three classes as they met up with Class B Gering High School. The results were not good for the Lady Raiders as a lid was pretty firmly attached to the Raider basket. L-N was able to pry that lid off five times throughout the game. They did, however, make 8 of 12 free throws.

"Mom never told me of times like this . . ." Elsa Jorgensen just grabbed a rebound and tries to put the ball back up for two points, but three Hershey defenders have other ideas as a tall defender blocks Elsa's best efforts. (Photo courtesy of Denise Mazour.)

Emma led the team in scoring with 9 points, making 5-6 free throws. Kylie and Kara each brought home 4 rebounds.

Turnovers were a major factor in the game as L-N gave up 32 while forcing 16 from Gering.
