Monday evening members of the Superior City Council reversed the foreclosure action they had instigated against the Lighthouse Daycare Center.

While the daycare center appears to be permanently closed, Mary Scroggins, the city’s development director, said the district Nazarene Church organization had brought the loan current and indicated plans to use the daycare building on East Seventh Street as a church. The former Baptist Church at Sixth and Commercial, which the Nazarene congregation had used as a church, will be sold and the proceeds applied to the city loan.

Scroggins informed the council a committee was meeting and exploring other options for opening a daycare center in Superior.

In other action the council approved hiring two police officer trainees, Kyle Golay and Samantha Houchin. It is anticipated they can be part of the next police academy class which begins in January.

Andrew Brittenham reported on the installation of AMI utility meters and received approval to purchase additional water meters.

The city’s electric department expects to finish the conversion of the department’s meters before the end of 2022. With the new meters in place, nearly every meter in town can be read remotely and most can be remotely disconnected should an emergency occur. Brittenham said the meters allow the department to more accurately track electrical usage in real time.

Many of the current water meters are located in basements and crawl spaces and are thus hard to read. Once the water meter conversion is complete, the city will begin converting natural gas meters.

The Superior Parks and Recreation Plan prepared by Five Rule Planning was approved with one addition.

Bobbi Pettit, the owner of Five-Rule Planning, proposed adding a proposed open air events pavillion in the southeast corner of City Park. She said it wouldn’t replace the current band shell but would provide an alternative facility for larger events, and would not interfere with the athletic field located at the northeast corner of the park.

The council allowed the addition of the pavillion before adopting the park development plan. The plan does not provide a timetable or funding sources but will hopefully aid in future park developments.
