A special meeting of the Superior Board of Education has been called for 7:30 Monday evening to consider the resignation of Marty Kobza as the district’s superintendent, a position he has held for approximately 5 years.

Matt Sullivan, president of the school board, told The Express, Kobza was leaving for personal reasons and had assured the board he was not unhappy with the board or the community support he had received.

Sullivan praised Kobza’s leadership and said the schools had made great progress under Kobza.

Kobza has accepted a similar position with a much larger school system at Lansing, Kansas.

Notice of his resignation caught Superior by surprise this week.

Because of the timing, Sullivan expects the Superior board will try to hire an interim superintendent to serve during the 2023-2024 school term.

This must be the year for area schools to change superintendents. This is the last year for Julie Ortero to serve as the superintendent of the South Central United District Schools, the Rock Hills superintendent has submitted his resignation at Mankato, and Thayer Central at Hebron is looking for a superintendent.

Sullivan said the average time for a Nebraska school superintendent to serve in a location is between five and seven years.

Kobza told The Express he was proud of the progress the Superior schools had achieved. He noted academic growth is being seen in the elementary school and he had worked for a supportive board who shared his vision. While here, he has worked to unify the curriculum from kindergarten through high school.

June 30 will be his last day as the Superior superintendent. He is to begin work for USD 469 on July 1.

Lansing is located in southeast Kansas near Kansas City. The school serves approximately 2,600 students.

The move is being made for family reasons. It will put the Kobza family near Mrs. Kobza’s parents in Kansas City and their daughter, Atlee, will be playing volleyball for Benedictine College at Atchinson, Kansas, about a half hour drive from Lansing.

Kobza has previous experience working in the Kansas educational system.

The faculty was notified Tuesday morning of Kobza’s decision to leave.

At that time Sullivan told the faculty “The board of education will be moving with expediency to fill the superintendent vacancy for next year. The plan at this time is to hire an interim superintendent to ensure that our students and staff experience a seamless transition during this process. We appreciate your support and patience and will provide updates as things progress.

In that message Kobza said: It is with mixed emotions that I have accepted an offer from USD 469. Thank you for your hard work and support during our time in Superior. If you have questions or if I can help you in any way do not hesitate.
