Barbara Ohmstede

Barb Ohmstede, 82, of Guide Rock, Nebraska, died Friday, March 3, 2023, at her home in Guide Rock.

Her funeral was at 11 a.m., Friday, March 17, at the United Methodist Church in Guide Rock with the Rev. Dale Thiele officiating. The Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud was in charge of the arrangements.

Barbara Gayle Ohmstede, the daughter of Henry and Daisey (Niceschwander) Heskett was born Jan. 13,1941, on the family farm near Burr Oak, Kansas. She died at the family home surrounded by her family on March 3,2023.

She attended school in Burr Oak and graduated from Burr Oak High school in 1959. She worked as a telephone operator at Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph in Superior, Nebraska. Barbara married Garold Ohmstede Oct.16,1960, in the Burr Oak United Methodist Church. They made their home at the Ohmstede family farm by Guide Rock for 54 years. To this union they were blessed with three daughters: twins Terri Lee and Sherri Lynn, and Vicki Louise.

Barbara was a member of the Rotary Welfare Club. She joined Irene Chapter 207 April 19,1967, was Grand Representative to Alabama in 1992, and received her 50 year pin in 2012. She was employed at Bill's Pharmacy, Red Cloud. In November 1977, she was baptized and joined membership with the Guide Rock United Methodist Church. Barbara served as election poll worker and in 2006 she went into the election poll worker hall of fame. She helped on the Oak Valley Farm, the Ohmstede family farm, as the bookkeeper and helped with farm duties where needed. Barbara was a member of the saddle club. She enjoyed family trail rides, dancing with hubby Garold, reading and hosting family and friends at the family home. She enjoyed watching and attending Nebraska Corn Husker volleyball games and attending their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren's events. Garold and Barbara enjoyed wintering in Texas and Arizona. They retired and moved to Guide Rock in the house where Garold's parents had lived in 2014.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donald Heskett; and sisters, Thelma Wallace, Norma Rohrdanz, Wilma Hageman, Ruth Pickett, Jacqueline Boyles and and Joan Lockwood; and grandson, Ethan Menke.

Left to cherish Barbara is her husband, Garold; Terri (Brian) Menke, Marquette; Sherri (Ed) Beam, Esbon, Kansas; Vicki (Garry) Greving, Chapman; Brother, Jerry (Kathy), Lincoln, Nebraska; five grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
