Two weeks until the Big Kansas Road Trip

April 20, 2023

The Big Kansas Road Trip (BKRT) is quickly approaching. BKRT Road Books are out and can be found at different locations. Happening May 4 through 7, there will be many attractions throughout Jewell County including “Pie on the Porch” from 2 to 3 p.m., in Burr Oak on Friday, tours of the Limestone Jail, and a mammoth scavenger hunt in Mankato. Sheets for the Mammoth Scavenger Hunt can be picked up at Mahin Insurance weekdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., or Possibilities from 8 a.m. to 3p.m., on Saturday. There will be kayaking and trailer rides at Emerson Lake in Jewell on Saturday. Saturday night from 7 to 9 p.m., the Formoso Skating Rink will be open. On Saturday, there will also be trailer rides to see historic homes in Mankato from 2 to 3:30 p.m. that depart from the museum every 15 minutes and last 30 minutes.

One of the most fun things about the BKRT is that it helps lead people to places they’ve never been in the state. This is a family friendly event that can instill acts of kindness, Kansas history, and fun for youngsters as well as the whole family.

Burr Oak, Formoso, Jewell, Mankato, Webber, Esbon, Ionia and Randall make up Jewell County which was established in 1887 and was named for Lt. Colonel Lewis Jewell of the 6th Regiment Kansas Volunteer Cavalry.

Jewell, Republic and Smith Counties will all be highlighted during this year’s Big Kansas Road Trip. If you are going to be an explorer, some things to think about are to bring lawn chairs; gas up whenever you can since not every town has gas pumps; restaurants will serve until the food is gone, so it might be a good idea to bring a cooler with food just in case; and if it is raining, stay off dirt or gravel roads. As a courtesy to those businesses that are opening their restrooms, bring a roll of toilet paper to offer them.

This is an event that can get our communities better known, so keep your friendly attitudes and cheery dispositions as the crowds come. Enjoy the BKRT from May 4 to 7 as people come to see Jewell County, and don’t be shy if a stranger wants a selfie with you!
