August 31, 2023

Tim Heche, Liberty Cove supervisor, talks about the Little Blue Natural Resources District as Jessica Hedges, LBNRD communications specialist, listens in the background. Thirteen members of the Nelson Rubies attended the event.

Even though the temperature passed 100 degrees later in the day, 13 women braved the soaring heat the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 22, to visit Liberty Cove recreational area and learn more about the Little Blue Natural Resources District. Tim Heche, supervisor of the Liberty Cove facility, and Jessica Hedges, media and communications specialist for the LBNRD, gave an overview of the aims and purposes of the district and of the educational opportunities extended to area youth. Their presentation was followed by either a walking or riding tour of the facility.

Liberty Cove has eight camping pads with electricity as well as open areas for tent camping, two shelters, two restrooms, a boat ramp, boat dock, playground, arboretum, walking and riding trails, and is stocked with fish. All agreed it is a beautiful place to relax and enjoy nature.

The women had lunch in Lawrence before returning to Nelson. Those attending were Ruth Epley, Sue Burge, Evie Olson, Brenda Lynch, Kathy Essink, Barb McCartney, Charlene Schulz, Carla Jeardoe, Sally Uhrmacher, Pat Drexel, Donna Gillan, Janis Culbertson and DeAnna Tuttle. Susan Williams helped to plan the event but was unable to attend.
