Chuck and DeAnna Tuttle attended the American Legion District 10 Fall Rally held at the Sutton Legion Hall on Saturday, Sept. 16. DeAnna led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem and Chuck gave the recitation of the POW/MIA Empty Chair ceremony. During the opening session, local and regional dignitaries were introduced and Vicki Ozenbaugh, past department auxiliary president, reported on the national convention and her duties as the chair of the National Security Committee and the “Be the One” project.

During the auxiliary breakout session, Tina Nelson,Americanism chair, provided updates on the essay contest, County Government Day suggestions and scholarships. It was also reported the Home Sweet Home project placed three veterans in apartments this past year. The project is in need of small appliances such as crock pots, coffee makers and toasters to place in the apartments. Other announcements were that the department executive committee meeting is scheduled for Nov. 4 in Nelson and the 2024 district convention will be held Feb. 10 in Nelson. The oratorical speech contest will be in Minden on Monday, Nov. 13, and application deadlines for various scholarships and Girls State were related.

The auction of donated items to benefit the Child Welfare Foundation is always the fun end of the day’s activities and this year was no exception with bidders trying to push other bidders higher for the most coveted item - - rhubarb pie! This year’s pie garnered a bid of nearly $100, but conventions in the past have seen bids of up to $400!

On Tuesday, Sept. 19, District 10 officers attended a special meeting of the Red Cloud Legion Family. The Tuttles and Don and Tina Nelson from Clay Center were treated to a meal followed by the presentation of special membership awards. Gary Thompson was presented an award for 50 years of membership and Korean War Veteran Jack R. Fountaine for 70 years of membership. One of these gentlemen will deliver a 78 year auxiliary member’s award to Louise Mountford in Lincoln. Louise is 102 years old and likes to attend Husker volleyball games!
