Cheryl Faimon obituary; Memorial Mass Oct. 7

SGM Cheryl A Faimon, 64, was born Feb. 11, 1959, in Red Cloud, Nebraska to Robert and Maureen (Menke) Faimon. She died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023, at Vitas Med Center in San Antonio, Texas.

A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life will be Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, at 1 p.m. at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Lawrence, Nebraska.

A luncheon, video and time for memories will follow at the Legion in Lawrence. Memorials may be given to the Lawrence American Legion-Community Building in honor of Cheryl's 34 years of service to our country.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Sept. 1, 2023, at Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. Burial was on Sept. 5, 2023, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio Texas.

Cheryl married Lindon Lee Willis, Sr. on Dec. 28, 2004, in San Antonio, Texas. Cheryl was raised on a farm in Nebraska and attended St. Stephen's Catholic Grade School, Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence Public High School in 1977. Cheryl proudly served her country by joining the Army shortly after high school graduation.

She attended basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama and Morse Code training in Fort Devens, Massachusetts. After 15 years of active duty, Chery transitioned to the US Army Reserves. Throughout her lifetime military career, she served in San Antonio, Germany, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Iraq, Washington, D.C., and St Louis; and was a veteran of the second Gulf War. In 2010, she retired from the Armed Forces as a highly decorated Sergeant Major, E9. Her career awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Non-commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device.

After retirement from the Army, Cheryl served on the HOA Board, and volunteered in many aspects in the neighborhood. She was well respected for the pride she took in helping the community. She served old and young alike with great care and gave to many charities both locally and abroad.

After her youngest child left the nest, she remained active by joining organizations like Secrets and World Ventures. She enjoyed time and traveling with her family. She especially appreciated the performing arts.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her husband, Lindon Lee Willis, Jr. in 2013; her parents, Robert and Maureen Faimon; brother, Bernard; grandparents Rudolph and Marie Faimon, and George and Alvera Menke; brother-in-law, Leonard Mazour; nephew, Derrick Faimon; her parents in-laws, Eddie, and Jessie Willis; and brother-in-law, Pete Willis.

Cheryl is survived by her children: Son, Calvin (Charmaine Lollar) Faimon of Pearl City, Hawaii; Daughter, Yvonne Walker (Kevin Stanley) of Stonecrest Georgia; Son, Lindon (Assia Phoenix) Willis, Jr of San Antonio, Texas; Son, Demetrius (Te'Anna Jenkins) Willis of The Colony, Texas; and, daughter Jessica Willis of Fort Worth, Texas; three Granddaughters: London Willis of San Antonio, Texas; Mila and Imani Willis of The Colony, Texas and Grandson, Demetrius Willis, Jr. of The Colony, Texas; four sisters: Connie (Gary) Buescher of Prior Lake, Minnesota, DeAnn (Don) Kohmetscher of Deweese, Nebraska, Paula (Gary) Kohmetscher of Blue Hill, and Roberta "Bobbi" (Jason) Johnson of Montgomery, Texas; two brothers: Russell (Donna) Faimon of Lawrence, NE and Roy (Peggy) Faimon of Blue Hill; sister-in-law, Jolene Faimon Mazour of Lawrence; 10 nieces; 13 Nephews; 28 great nieces; and 18 great- nephews; sister-in-law, Deborah Willis of Florida; brothers-in-law, Warren Willis of Arizona, Darrell Willis of New York, Dennis Willis of New York, and Chris Willis of North Carolina as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Cheryl was a loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend to all.
