Spring Storm hits Southcentral Nebraska

Early evening on Monday a severe storm made its way through Nuckolls County with heavy rains, strong winds and hail. The photo with the dime was sent in by Kevin Bogus of Oak, and the photo with the penny by Robert Swift while visiting family in Nelson.

April Shower were always supposed to bring May Flowers!

However, 2024 is a different sort of animal. The first seven days of the month have brought much need rain to the area along with severe storms causing damage.

Nuckolls and Webster counties did receive moisture during those first four months. However, the first seven days of May saw amounts that were about equal to one-half of what came in four months.

For example, in the eastern end of the Little Blue NRD, 5.8 inches of rain fell in four months while they received 3.1 inches so far in May.

Hebron had 3.6 in four months and 2.2 in May.

Lawrence had 5.6 inches in four months and 2.2 in May.

Superior had 4.1 inches in four months and 2.6 in May.

Nelson-Nora area: 5.4 inches in four months with 2.5 inches falling in May.

From Inavale to Lawrence . . . The South Central PPD had a busy time last week as the May 2 storm blew down 16 poles during the nighttime storm. It is still being debated if a tornado did the damage or if it was straight line winds.

Everyone enjoys the rain, but so often that rain comes with storms of some sort. The May of 2024 has not been an exception . . . so far.

Two weeks ago, the Lincoln-Omaha area experienced tornados. There has been some opinions that the storm of May 2nd may have had tornados as well to Southcentral Nebraska. However, the storm came in the middle of the night and no one is sure if there were tornados or very strong 'straight line' winds.

The South Central Public Power District is having a busy time after that storm. Power poles extending from west/southwest of Red Cloud, northeast past Cowles to north of Lawrence were damaged. (Approximately 40 to 50 miles) Seems about 16 poles went down, along with the accompanying damage to wires, etc.

Property damage other than the power poles is not known except for some reports of window damage.

Remember all those "foggy days" last winter. The old wives tale says: "90 days following the fog, moisture will return."
