Jim Menke honored at Legion meeting

Department of Nebraska American Legion honored James "Jim" Menke, Adjutant and Club Manager of Nelson Post 187, at the state convention held on June 24 to 27, in Lincoln, Neb.  Since Jim was unable to attend the convention, his awards were presented to Post 187 Commander Chuck Tuttle to be presented to Jim.

Pictured above is Commander Tuttle presenting the American Citizenship and Cody Kerr Memorial Awards to Jim at the regular Post 187 meeting on July 8. The prestigious Cody Kerr Memorial Award recognizes Legionnaires for their community service. At the time of his death, 47 year old Cody Kerr, a World War II veteran from Valentine, was the department's community services chairman. His selfless service to the American Legion inspired the award, which was first presented to his widow in 1954. The committee made up of past department commanders selected Jim based on his guiding force in obtaining the current meeting and club rooms, his 52 years of membership, his participation in all Legion activities and leadership shown by serving in all officer capacities.

Following the regular business meetings of the Legion, Auxiliary and SALS, a time of fellowship and refreshments was held in honor of Jim's accomplishments.
