Goose waddles home, survives Five Wild Cousins Join Tame Pair

The Geese at Lake Emerson

September 9, 2021

These geese live at Lake Emerson near Jewell. They were there when the lake froze over and the gray one "waddled" home. The two were caught and stayed for the winter at "home" before being taken back to Lake Emerson.

Before last winter's bitter spell, a flock of tame geese lived on and around Lake Emerson. They had been there since last summer when the lake was drained for dredging. They stayed during the dredging. Tame geese can't fly.

But when it got cold, really cold, the entire lake froze over. Some of the flock did not survive the elements and the predators. However, there was one gray goose that started for home. As a goose waddles, it was about a half mile.

Home was Dale Willmeth's back yard in Jewell where it had been raised. He was about a half a block away when Willmeth and Karen Cook found him. Scared but they caught him. Another white goose was caught by Willmeth and Darrell Bohnert.

The two geese spent the rest of the winter at "home." Then, when the lake was refilled and dredging over, they moved back to Lake Emerson. They now have about five of their wild cousins living near them on the lake.

So, go tell Aunt Rhody, the old gray goose is not dead!
