Pete Keifer vacancy

November 4, 2021

Pete Keifer, a life-long Bostwick resident and the District 1 Nuckolls County Commissioner, died Thursday, creating a vacancy on the board.

Keifer was elected in the November, 2018 general election. He was a Republican.

A committee, composed of John Hodge, county attorney, Carrie Miller, county clerk and Vicki Ensign , county treasurer, has been formed. The committee has 45 days to select a replacement for Keifer.

Applications must be received at the county clerk’s office by Wednesday, Nov. 17. Interviews will be conducted on Nov. 22. Monday, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day and the courthouse will be closed.

The committee will solicit candidates for the position. The selected candidate will serve out the unexpired portion of Keifer’s term which expires January, 2023. The candidate will not be required to run for election in the primary.

Interested parties are asked to submit their name, address and date of birth.

Interested candidates will be interviewed by the committee. Letters of support may be submitted to the committee.

Similar situations occurred in April, 1990, when District 3 commissioner Jerome Karmazin died. Roy Dugan died in a truck accident in October, 2001. Both commissioner seats were filled after the committee selected a replacement.

Candidates for the position are required to be a registered voter, a resident of Nuckolls County for at least six months and live in District 1.
