Willie's touchdown dreams come true

October 20, 2022

Will Dougherty has loved Raider football for a long time. He dreamed of playing on the team one day, but his condition does not allow for that. Will was born with a pineal cyst in his brain, so any activity where he could receive a head injury is out of the question. When Mr. Blevins came up with a plan to allow Will to score a touchdown, the entire team was behind him. Or, in this case, in front of him.

In anticipation of this, Mr. Blevins officially added him to the team roster at the start of the season and has had Will practice his play all year. At the football game for parents' night, Will suited up and stood on the sideline for his turn with the ball. The Raiders defended Will like his life depended on it. They got him into the endzone. I thought for sure they would injure him in their celebration of the moment!

It was a great night for Will and Raider football, Will is a senior this year and has been the student manager and videographer since junior high. Will's mother said, "Doing this was a huge deal for Willie, and we are so proud of him and the Lawrence Nelson football team! They are truly a tight-knit family! It really got to our hearts watching the team do this for Willie! Having the crowd scream with excitement was amazing! Special thanks to Mr. Blevins, Kevin Wheelan and the rest of the coaches and players for making our son's dream come true!"
