The L-N 2022 Football season came to an end last Friday. It came in the second round of playoff games for Class D-2 to a traditional power, Bruning-Davenport-Shickley. The 26-54 loss ended a successful season for the 2022 team. They will have memories of: • Being one of the top 16 teams in the state in Class D-2; • district champions; • Continuing a playoff history for the Raiders; • Recording the first winning season since 2018 and tying the 2016 record of 8-2; • Winning several games over traditional foes like Kenesaw and Blue Hill.

Ya, the lost hurt . . . a lot, the 2022 team had its heart set on going deep into the playoffs. However, BDS sported its traditional brand of football, being large and fast.

The game was played on a beautiful autumn evening, great for a football game.

Score by quarter:

L-N 0 12 0 14 - 26

BDS 8 24 8 14 - 54

L-N kicked to start the game and BDS promptly took the ball 51 yards in ten plays and scored with almost five minutes off the clock. The Raiders responded with a 47 yard drive of their own that ended just five yards short of a TD with a pass knocked down. The failure to score at this time seemed to be instrumental for the game.

The second period was a scoring bonanza. BDS scored first, but L-N answered with a 54 yd. scoring drive that saw Krayton Kucera score on a three yard run. The PAT failed, but there were several outstanding plays: two passes to Erik Wheeland totaling 22 yards and a single 22 yd. pass play to Tyson Kotinek that saw Tyson come down from jumping high right at the side line, being able to land just inches inside the side line. BDS was able to break two big plays to score twice before the Raiders' Kucera and Bayln Bargen connected on a 59 yard pass play to score. The PAT failed. Following a BDS kickoff, a Raider penalty set them back against their own goal when a fumble occurred and L-N got caught with a safety.

BDS scored early in the 3rd period, but were scoreless after that. The Raiders were hurt with a lost fumble and an interception in this period.

Erik Wheeland caught a pass in the end zone during the Bruning-Davenport-Shickley playoff game after the second Raider touchdown for the game. However, a Raider penalty nullified the play and they did not earn the two points that comes with a successful point after touchdown (PAT) attempt.

BDS scored early in the 4th period followed by a 13 play, 56 yard drive to score when Toby Kotinek raced 8 yards into the end zone. Kucera ran the PAT. BDS returned the favor and scored. With less than three minutes left in the game, Toby Kotinek raced for 15 yards followed quickly by a 33 yard TD run by Krayton Kucera. The PAT failed. Final score 26-54.

L-N gave up 1 of 2 fumbles and one interception while BDS had three fumbles without losing one. L-N had 11 first down while BDS had 15.

Offensively for L-N: Kucera had 67 yards rushing and Toby Kotinek had 21; Kucera was 20 of 30 passing for 213 yard. On the receiving end of those passes were: Erik Wheeland 5 for 71 yards; Bayln Bargen 5 for 81 yards; Toby Kotinek 2 for 10 yards and Tyson Kotinek 7 for 51 yards.

Total offensive yards: L-N 301; BDS 443.

Defensive tackles stats: (Assisted-unassisted) Clay Williams 5-2; Krayton Kucera 7-7; Roy Davidson 2-3; Connor Janda 10-7; Nolan Ostdiek 8-4; Erik Wheeland 8-4; Tyson Kotinek 2-1; Devyn Zikmund 1-1; Toby Kotinek 3-0; Keaton Mazour 2-2; Wyatt Hajny 1-1.

Playing their final game in a Raider uniform were seniors: Krayton Kucera, Erik Wheeland, Tyson Kotinek, Devyn Zikmund, Toby Kotinek, Keaton Mazour, Trev Mueller, Wyatt Hajny and Will Dougherty.
