The Superior High School girls basketball team lost a nail biter, 42-37, to a strong C-1 Milford Eagles team in the opening round game of the Runza Holiday Tournament Wednesday. The Wildcats roared back, Thursday, with a 59-12 thrashing of the Mead Raiders. Superior topped the Wood River Eagles 59-38 Friday to improve their record to 8-2.

Superior stayed close to the 7-2 Milford Eagles but was unable to close the gap. The Wildcats led Mead 33-2 at the half and coasted to their 58-12 win. The Wildcats sprinted out to a 37-20 lead over Wood River after two quarters and never looked back as they cruised to a 59-38 win.

Ella Gardner dropped through 20 points to lead Superior scoring against Milford. Sadie Cornell accounted for seven points. Halle Bargen put up five points. Laci Kirchhoff chipped in three points. Ariana Heusinkvelt added two points for the Wildcats. Cornell sagged six rebounds. Bargen and Gardner picked off five rebounds each. Kirchhoff hit the boards to nail four rebounds. Faith Butler grabbed three rebounds. Madison Heusinkvelt pulled down two rebounds. Ariana Heusinkvelt had one rebound.

Cornell led the Wildcat scoring against Mead with 13 points. Gardner lit it up for nine points. Bargen and Ariana Heusinkvelt dropped through eight points apiece. Lilly Edwards accounted for seven points. Rayne Biltoft put through six points. Butler scored three points. Kirchhoff and Madison Heusinkvelt scored two points each. Madison Heusinkvelt pulled away six rebounds. Kirchhoff took away five rebounds for the Wildcats. Butler, Edwards and Gardner provided four rebounds apiece. Biltoft and Ava Kirchhoff wrestled away three rebounds each. Bargen posted two rebounds. Cornell had a rebound.

Garner took the scoring lead against Wood River with a season high 27 points. Cornell added 19 points to the Superior offensive cause. Bargen came up with five points. Laci Kirchhoff listed four points. Edwards and Ariana Heusinkvelt scored two points apiece. Gardner climbed the boards for eight rebounds. Madison Heusinkvelt was credited with five rebounds. Butler and Laci Kirchhoff acquired four rebounds each. Bargen nailed down three rebounds. Cornell and Edwards were responsible for two rebounds each. Ariana Heusinkvelt added a rebounds.

Superior hosts the Thayer Central Titans at the high school gymnasium Friday. The Wildcats visit Geneva, Saturday, for a game with Fillmore Central. The Heartland Huskies visit Superior Tuesday.
