SHS girls improve to 10-2: win streak at four

Halle Bargen has her sights set on two points as she goes to the hoop for Superior against Thayer Central at Superior Friday.

The Superior High School girls basketball team has put together a four game winning streak. They downed the Thayer Central Titans 54-39 at Superior Friday. They added to the streak with a 58-45 win over the Fillmore Central Panthers at Geneva Saturday. The Wildcats hosted the Heartland Huskies at Superior Tuesday. Game results were unavailable at press time.

The secret to Superior's success at Thayer Central was holding their prolific scoring threat, Natalie Tietjen, in check. The Wildcats stepped up and won a game they needed against a tough opponent. The teams were deadlocked at 10 points each after the first quarter. Superior took charge and never trailed as they held a 39-30 lead at the half. The Wildcats continued to pull away and sealed the win. Superior easily handled Fillmore Central taking a 28-18 lead into the half. Superior continued to pull away as they recorded win number 10 of the season to go along with two losses.

Halle Bargen and Ella Gardner led the Superior scoring charge against Thayer Central with 14 points apiece. Laci Kirchhoff dropped through 11 points. Sadie Cornell contributed seven points. Ariana Heusinkvelt added five points. Faith Butler scored three points. Butler and Kirchhoff nabbed six rebounds each. Gardner picked off four rebounds. Cornell snagged three rebounds. Madison Heusinkvelt had one rebound.

Kirchhoff lit up the score board with 19 points against Fillmore Central. Butler hit for 13 points. Gardner kicked in 12 points. Bargen netted 11 points. Madison Heusinkvelt posted two points. Cornell sank a free throw for one point. Cornell hit the boards for 10 rebounds. Bargen hauled off nine rebounds. Butler took away seven rebounds. Kirchhoff secured four rebounds. Gardner took away three rebounds. Ariana Heusinkvelt and Madison Heusinkvelt accounted for one rebound each.

The Wildcats host Sandy Creek, Saturday, at the high school gymnasium in Superior. The St. Cecilia game has been moved to Monday. It was originally scheduled for Tuesday. This includes the junior varsity game.
