Nelson Swimming Pool News

The Nelson pool had a visit from the state inspector on Monday, June 12. We had a couple minor infractions, but all in all we passed with what I consider to be an A minus. We get a write up for water standing by one of the pool ladders, and this year was not any different. The water in the showers was a couple degrees too warm, and one of the gauges for the filter was acting up, so that was a negative mark as well. The inspector also mentioned the pool needed to be repainted. I heard from a little birdie the issue is being looked into by the park board for this fall. Not going to lie. That makes me just a little excited!

Isabella Vaughn, Nelson Pool's self-proclaimed junior lifeguard, mans her station helping lifeguard Raylene Miller keep our patrons safe while swimming. Isabella, or Moo, as we call her, is the daughter of Kasey Vaughn, assistant manager, and a sister to two of the Nelson lifeguards. Last season she decided she needed a basket in the office, just like her brother and sister, and this year she has graduated to having a whistle of her own. Staff report, "She kind of has the manager wrapped around her finger and maybe in training to replace her."

Swimming lessons were held last week, June 12 through 16, with two small classes, about 10 children total. The most fun part for the children was learning to dive, and the diving board became popular toward the end of the week. The best part about the diving board is they think they are having fun, but actually they are working on the skills they learned throughout the week. Everyone did well - students and teachers. I just wish we had gotten pictures, but we were all too busy having fun.

We had another lifeguard join the ranks, Riley Cannaday has returned for the season. He had planned to pursue a different line of work for the summer, but realized he missed us too much. I am happy to have him back on the team.

We will be having a night swim from 9 to 12 Friday. Admission is $4. No passes will be accepted for night swims. We are planning a few for July as well, follow our facebook page, Nelson Swimming Pool, for more information.

Tuesdays and Thursdays we will be having water arobics classes, admission is $1. A few benefits of water arobics are, working out the heart muscles, enhancing balance and coordination. It's easy on the joints which reduces risk of injury. Its can also help with weight loss and raising metabolism while building muscle mass and strength, and helps with recovery from injury.

As always, adult swim is from 5 to 6. Monday through Saturday and admission is $1.
