Wildcats drop season opener to Alma, 74-6

Despite dropping their season opener 74-6 to the Alma Cardinals in Alma, Friday, several bright spots were apparent for the Wildcats.

Superior has no seniors on the team. Many of the sophomores did not see playing time last season.

The team showed offensive promise in the opening minutes until miscues originating from inexperience popped up.

The ground focused offense was not anemic. Four ball carriers accounted for 134 yards. The passing attack added another 48 yards. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, inopportune turnovers and penalties negated what momentum was generated.

Superior ran 56 plays and acquired 10 first downs in comparison to Alma's 30 plays and 13 first downs.

Superior's defense was flummoxed by a dual threat Alma offense which was effective both in the air and on the ground.

Lincoln Sander connected with three of his eight passes for 42 yards and a touchdown.

Colten Butler hauled in a reception for 30 yards and a touchdown. Kyler Boyles took in one pass for three yards. Dayne Clark made one reception for 15 yards.

Boyles led the Wildcat runners with 61 yards on 14 carries. Sander covered 55 yards with his 16 attempts. Butler carried the ball seven times for 10 yards. Dayne Clark picked up eight yards with his three carries.

Boyles led the defense with six solo tackles. Clark and Thomas Mathis pulled down three solo tackles each. Sander accounted for two solo shots. Christian Osweiller and Cooper Sheely collected a solo tackle apiece.

Boyles averaged more than 27 yards with each of his three punts.

Superior plays its home opener at Brodstone Field, Friday, when the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders come to town in a battle for intra-county bragging rights. The Raiders have an experienced team with seven seniors but throw out the odds when these two teams tangle.

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. but weather conditions may dicatte otherwise.
