L-N girls basketball team earn first win of season

December 14, 2023

It took a trip out west for the L-N girls’ basketball team to find their first victory of this young season. But, find it they did with a team effort at Franklin. It was not a blow-out win, but one where the girls played well, with their defensive effort maybe the most effective tool.

GIRLS: L-N 34 – FRANKLIN 20

The box score:

L-N                11    7    8    8  -  34

Franklin          7     4    7    2  -  20

Kara Menke seems to be a favorite of all our opponents so far this season and they guard her closely. In the first half of play, Addi McCloskey, Jessica Sole and Josie Hajny all kept the Raiders in the game leading to a halftime lead of 18 to 11.

In the second half, Kara Menke found ways to deflect Franklin’s defensive efforts and scored 11 of the Raider’s 16 points. Danyelle Church scored the final points of the game with a free throw.

The game revolved around many of the little things in basketball that are not talked about a whole lot. For example, L-N forced 29 turnovers in the game and although Franklin had a couple for rebounds, the Raiders dominated the offensive rebounds which gave them extra chances to score. A lot of those little things earned the victory, maybe a strong point was at the free throw line where nine points were found in this low scoring game. Kara Menke recorded her first ‘double-double’ for the year.

(FG, FT, Rb, Pts.)

Addi McCloskey 2-6, 1-2, 1, 7; Brook Combs-Glebe 0-2, 0-2, 4, 0; Jessica Sole 2-10, 1-2, 4, 6;

L-N total: 11-48, 9-20, 27, 34;

GIRLS: L-N 23 – BDS 43

The box score:

L-N            4     9     6      4  -  23

BDS         11    7    13    12  -  43

The trip east to play one of the yearly powerful teams in Class D-1 did not result in a victory last Saturday. BDS came out with a strong effort, forcing turnovers and scoring well, making almost 40 percent of their field goal attempts.

The Raiders just did not have many attempts at the basket giving up 25 turnovers in the game.

Josie Hajny was perfect from the charity stripe in the game making 6 of 6 free throws. Kara Menke was just one rebound away from another double-double.

(FG, FT, Rb, Pts.)

Addi McCloskey 1-2, 0-0, 1, 2; Brook Combs-Glebe  0-1, 0-0, 1, 0;
