For many years the tall stacks of the cement plant west of Superior sent a plume of smoke into the sky. The kilns that turned crushed limestone into cement operated at high temperatures. In the winter, the smoke plume was thick when the hot air hit cold air. Even in the summer there was smoke coming out of the stacks. The smoke would be blown in a particular direction by the wind. Planning is well underway for the 147th annual Nuckolls County Fair. As usual, the fair will be held on the county fairgrounds located on a hill south of Nelson. With the number of COVID-19 cases declining, planners expect the fair will be a public event. Fair related events will be spread over two weeks. Work is progressing on Supeiror’s newest retail store. Inside the newly constructed building on West Third Street Workers have installed a long row of cooler and freezer cases. Outside site work is complete. Shelving and display units are being set up. The project superintendent expects the set-up work to be completed by Saturday. The next step will be stocking the shelves. Until this week, we have had a rather mild winter, weatherwise, with little snow. But with the Nebraska state basketball tournament underway this week in Lincoln, we should have known the nice weather wouldn’t last. Nuckolls County residents awoke Monday morning to find approximately a half inch of snow blanketing the area. The amount of snow increased moving north to south across the two-state area. Among the real estate transfers is a small entry noting the sale of seven Superior lots to Superior Historic Redevelopment, Inc. Superior Historic Redevelopment is the official name for the non-profit corporation which owns and is redeveloping the Superior Auditorium. The Dentonia Post Office was organized on Aug. 25, 1882, and discontinued on Dec. 31, 1903. Bruntzel's Quick Reference to Kansas gives the location as Section 29 of Odessa Township. Dentonia is not found on the 1878 Jewell County map nor is it listed in the 1880 Kansas Gazetteer. Dennis Kennedy, equipment operator, retired on March 4, after 21 years of service with the Kansas Department of Transportation. Kennedy began his career with KDOT in 2001 in Mankato where he spent his career performing basic maintenance tasks such as mowing which he enjoyed, road repair and as the operator of an assigned dump truck which he took care of. It was the end of the season for the Lawrence-Nelson boys basketball team. They fell to Falls City Sacred Heart, 65-41, at Diller-Odell High School, Odell, last Tuesday. The loss eliminated the Raiders from post-season play. They finished the season with a 12-11 record. Theo Kathman and Logan Menke played their final game as they each graduate in May.
