  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Mar 23, 2023

Recently I saw a copy of the poem “Swing” by the writer, Robert Lewis Stevenson. It brought many thoughts and memories. I’m sure every mother has read this poem to her children and if not mothers need to. It goes like this--- How do you like to go up in the swing Up in the air so blue? Oh, I do think it is the pleasantest thing Ever a child can do! Up in the air and over the wall, Till I can see so wide, Rivers and trees and cattle and all Over the countryside-- Till I look down on the garden green, Down on the roof so brown-- Up in the air I...

  • Editor's notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Mar 23, 2023

I was asked Saturday what I thought about artificial intelligence. As part of my response I cited a couple of computer programs I purchased that were supposed to write football and basketball stories. I’m not sure how many years ago that was, but I remember the programs came on 3.5 inch floppy discs so you know it has been awhile. They didn’t meet my expectations and I soon put them aside. Apparently other buyers must have had a similar response as it has been many years since I saw any marketing materials from the developer. I’ve been using...

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    Mar 23, 2023

Q: Why was the day of rest and meeting changed from Saturday to Sunday when the 4th commandment says to “Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy?” A: When I was growing up, I would often try to overhear discussions between my mom and older brother if I heard her telling him to do something. If her instructions to my brother applied to me also, I wanted to be a step ahead in making sure I did what I needed to. But they sometimes discussed things that didn’t apply to me, in which case I was off the hook. It is important to remember that the Old T...

  • Puffs

    Mar 23, 2023

Tired of waiting for Spring ? ? ? “Spring – Autumn” I’ve always considered opposite ends of the same book case. Consider the following quote from a book I’m reading about the autumn of 1956. “Autumn arrives fitfully to Brooklyn, feinting forward, dropping back, hinting at itself. Wool-sock mornings, shirtsleeve afternoons.” If I didn’t know better I’d think someone was writing about the Spring of 2023. It does amaze me that after 67 years the more things change, the more they stay the same. A O Last week I talked a little about possible donatio...

  • Love my crazy life

    Teraesa Bruce|Mar 23, 2023

We barely had the time to catch our breath after returning from Texas before heading out again. I was scheduled for minor surgery in Hastings at eight o’clock Monday morning. For some reason, I was under the impression I would be back to the grind in just a few days. Man, was I wrong. I don’t want to go into detail about the procedure, but I’ll give you a hint, it was a big pain in the hind end. The pain I am referring to has been with me for a long time, and never did it cause me the troubles that having it removed have. I have done as littl...

The latest we know about happened just before midnight last Thursday, March 16. The other thing about earthquakes is that they get very little attention unless they inflict significant damage to property or people.
