Early Jewell businessman, John Calvin Postlethwaite was born in August 1848 in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. He died Nov. 26. 1910, at Jewell. In 1869, he came to Kansas and entered employment at the Blue Valley Bank at Manhattan. He was the bank’s cashier and bookkeeper.

In 1870, he married Louise D. McClung, sister of W. C. McClung of Jewell. In the spring of 1870, he filed on his homestead 2 1⁄2 miles north of Jewell.

Sometime in 1873 he moved to town. In 1880 he built the first building on the south side of the square and organized the Jewell City Bank. He ran it until 1885 when he sold his interest to John Schaefer. He later aided in organizing the First National Bank of which he was vice president at the time of his death.

In 1882 he bought back the bank building, he had formerly built and opened his office therein, where for more than 22 years he conducted and extensive law, real estate loan and insurance business, taking in his son Robert, into partnership with him in 1896.

Mr. Postlethwaite was a member of the Presbyterian church from his youth. On July 4, 1870, at the Independence Day Celebration in Jewell, he gave the first public prayer in Jewell County. Later he assisted in organizing the Presbyterian church in Jewell. In 1878, it was thought best to disband this church and unite with the Methodist.

Mr. Postlethwaite is buried in the Wallace Cemetery near Jewell.

Mary Shelton had a visit from Gloria Hanson of Concordia a week ago Thursday. Gloria had brought Mary the book “Beatrix Potter, Scientist” written by Gloria’s granddaughter, Lindsay H. Metcalf.

Jody Pryor, Alaska, and Jack Birdsell, Missouri, were in Jewell last weekend visiting relatives and friends.

The Jewell County Men’s Prayer Breakfast is at 7 a.m. Saturday at the Harmony United Methodist church in Mankato.

There will be a government commodities distribution, at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept 17, at the Jewell Apartments.

At this writing, Carol Bourbon is a patient in the Mitchell County Hospital.

Cindy Traump in back in Jewell after a trip to several points in Texas including Aransas Pass, Robstown, Galveston, LaMarque and Dayton. In Dayton, she attended a church service and heard her brother preach. A point of the trip was her granddaughter, Hailley Herrera’s back surgery which went well! She shared quality time with step-great-granddaughter, Revelle. While in Texas, Cindy said she remembered why she left Texas – it is hot there.

Ava and Rylan were the candle lighters for Trinity United Methodist Church on Sunday. Martha Matthews gave the devotional on prayer. Jan McCollough was the pianist. Pastor Rice began a series on Prayer. Keep it Simple, Keep it Real, Keep it Up!

The J.O.Y. Ministries gave the community a good time at Family Game Night last Wednesday. Lots of conversation, games and wonderful snow cones! Thank you J.O.Y. Ministries of Trinity UMC.

Thelma Shelton, Rita Rogers and Cindy Traump declared it “Girl’s Lunch Out” on Sunday. They went to Salina for lunch and pedicures! We expect to see the three in sandals showing off those pedicures.

The United Methodist Women at Trinity are having a “Church Cleaning Day” today (Thursday) all day. Join when you can. Next Sunday is UMW Sunday at Trinity.

Bill Eilert called Ye Scribe to let us know he too has been on the deck of the USS Missouri. The battleship was in dry dock in Bremerton, Wash., when he was on board. The battleship’s deck was the location of Japan’s official surrender which ended World War II.

The Palmer Museum Committee is asking for help with the fall display for the museum. They would like to make a display on kitchens pioneer women used from the 1870s through 1910 era. This would include old china place settings, souvenirs from Callie’s Store, Old Christmas toys, old hand work. The committee would like to have these items in the next week. If you have anything you would loan the committee, contact Annette Burks, 428-3357 or Peggy Bohnert 428-3558. These woman are in charge of the display.

Caleb Eilert is again running cross country for the Beloit Trojans. He participated and placed first in the Concordia Invitational Cross Country Meet in Concordia on Sept. 3. Congratulations Caleb!

On Friday, Kerma and Rachel Crouse located the sites of the former Branchport, Holmwood and Gregory post office. The three were in the same location – the name was just changed over the 30 years the post office was in existence.

There are hummingbirds in Jewell! Many may already know and have the speedy little visitors but this past week has been a first for Kerma Crouse. She is delighted they have dropped by. She was also glad to have Jody Pryor, Mary Shelton and Glen McClure stop by.

The Jewell Sesquicentennial Committee will meet at the Jewell Community Center at 1 p.m. Monday.

Jewell Chamber of Commerce members will have their September meeting at the Jewell Community Center at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
