Roy Vap

Roy Mitchell Vap, 69, the son of Theresa (Bursovsky) and Melvin Vap, was born July 27, 1951, at Hastings, Neb. He died April 21, at CHI St. Elizabeth Regional Health Center in Lincoln, Neb.

A lifelong resident of the area, Roy grew up in Clay County and graduated from Sandy Creek High School with the Class of 1969. He continued his formal education at Kearney State Teachers College where he earned his bachelor of science degree in microbiology with a minor in business. Roy was united in marriage with Cheryl Mays on Oct. 2, 1971, at Kearney, Neb.

A veteran of the United States Army, Roy was inducted on Nov. 8, 1973. While serving in the armed forces, Roy was professionally trained as a medical lab specialist. On June 7, 1977, he was discharged at the rank of sergeant from Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Roy and Cheryl moved to the Lawrence-Deweese area to make their home.

Roy dedicated his professional life to the medical field and helping others. He was employed at the Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud where he developed the lab facilities and also served as the hospital administrator. In 1984, the family moved to Red Cloud where they lived on the farm south of town.

Roy was a member of the Red Cloud Sacred Heart Church and served as a lector for many years. He also belonged to the American Legion Post at both Lawrence and then Red Cloud. In his leisure time, Roy enjoyed working on the farm, fishing, antiques, cars and riding his motorcyle. He earned his private pilot’s license in aviation. Roy’s greatest love and enthusiasm in life was for his family. He especially looked forward to the time they had together.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Theresa and Melvin Vap; and a brother, Larry Vap.

Survivors are his wife, Cheryl of Red Cloud; daugther, Mistie Day of Post, Texas; sons, Torrey Vap of Riverview, Fla., and Jeff Vap of Aurora, Neb.; 12 grandchildren (with one on the way); four great-grandchildren (also with one on the way); sisters, Jean Ritchie of Hebron, and Debbie Eickmann of Edgar.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m., Friday, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Red Cloud with Fr. Paul Frank officiating.

Interment with military honors will be at the St. Martin’s Cemetery northeast of Lawrence.

The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud.

Gary Jeardoe

Gary “Frenchy” Dwain Jeardoe, 72, died April 20. He was born on Jan. 22, 1949, in Belleville, to Pearl E. and Viola Bernadean (Awalt) Jeardoe. He graduated from Scandia High School with the Class of 1967, and then attended Cloud County Community College.

He was united in marriage to Jacqueline Skocny on Feb. 14, 1976,

in Belleville, and to this union of 45 years, three sons were born.

Frenchy, as he was known by many, was a crop consultant for more than 26

years. He held the Kansas state record for highest corn yield at 337 3⁄4 bushels per acre. Gary owned and operated the Mustang Inn in Cuba for a period of time. During his free time, Gary enjoyed golfing, umpiring softball and baseball games, and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Randy Jeardoe.

He is survived by his wife Jackie; sons, Gary Dwain Jr., Concordia, Wayne Adam, Concordia, and Derrek Lee Jeardoe, Clearwater; three grandchildren; his brothers, David and Jessie Jeardoe; and his sister, Trudy Beam.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, at Zion Cemetery, rural Talmo.
