SHS volleyball team state tourney bound

The Superior High School volleyball team has qualified for the state tournament for the fifth consecutive year. Though Superior lost its sub-district final match to Sutton in five sets, they were highly ranked in the wildcard point standings. This enabled them to advance to the district C 2-3 final as the number three seed. They were paired with the number 14 seed Burwell. They dispatched Burwell in three sets, 25-13, 15-16 and 25-23, to advance to the state tournament in Lincoln beginning today (Thursday).

Superior took the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-15 from Sutton in Tuesday's final sub-district C 2-6 match. The Mustangs refused to roll over and roared back and took three straight sets, 13-25, 23-25 and 7-15, to advance to the district finals. Superior gained entrance to the district round through wildcard points.

Shayla Meyer was the Wildcats lead killer against Sutton with 24. Cailyn Barry stepped up to the net with 20 kills. Teegan Duncan and Madison Heusinkvelt pounded down four kills each. Brooklynn Grabast notched three kills. Ella Gardner had a kill.

Meyer sliced through three aces. Barry and Meyer each posted a block.

Gardner spooned up 21 digs. Meyer provided 19 digs. Duncan and Atlee Kobza produced 13 digs apiece for the Wildcats. Sadie Rempel came through with nine digs. Grabast had a dig.

Meyer topped the kill chart against the Burwell Longhorns with 18. Duncan contributed seven kills. Barry and Grabast listed five kills each for the match. Heusinkvelt accounted for three kills. Gardner made one kill.

Meyer scored with two aces.

Superior opens the tournament today (Thursday) when they take on the number five seed Amherst at 7 p.m. on the Pinnacle Bank Arena north court.

Their progression through the tournament is dependent on the outcome of Thursday's match. Semi-final matches are played Friday at the Pinnacle Bank Arena. Consolation and championship matches are scheduled for Saturday at the Devaney Center court on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.
