The regular meeting of the Mankato City Council was called to order by Mayor Justin Schoonover on June 7. Councilmen present were: Sam Becker, Kevin Ost and Lyle Dauner. Councilman George Hennion appeared via Zoom. Also present were Darrell Miller, city attorney, and Sharon McCormick, interim city clerk.

Visitors present were: city employee Jim Zadina, Bill Thomas, Barbara Thomas, Carla Boyles, Carol Thomason on behalf of Golden Years Club, Sheriff Don Jacobs, Melinda Ost, Jennifer and Vincent Urbaniak representing the 150th Celebration committee, and Rodney Payne.

Mayor Schoonover requested that everyone join in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Representatives from the Golden Years Club provided information regarding the operation of the Golden Years Club as to the community center. An invitation was extended to the council to come to the Golden Years Club on June 15 and join in the meal.

Melinda Ost expressed her concern over problems with her neighbors’ dogs and the lack of response from the sheriff’s office. Sheriff Jacobs responded.

Jennifer Urbaniak reported on the events of the 150 year celebration and advised the council the celebration was successful with participation by many and the balance in the account for expenses was still positive. The council expressed thanks to Jennifer and the committee for their efforts.

Nikki Harrison from the League of Kansas Municipalities participated in a ZOOM conference with the council regarding an interview of a candidate. Nikki was advised to schedule the interview to be held in person.

The delinquent accounts and RLF loans were reviewed with no action taken.

Discussion was held concerning the John Tyler Memorial funds. It was reported a portion of the funds had been used for a vacuum for the pool.

Discussion was had concerning free swimming during the Threshing Bee and the consensus was to continue with the prior practice of allowing free swimming.

Discussion was had concerning of purchasing an additional camera for the community center. No action was taken.

Discussion was had concerning wages or bonuses for the lifeguards. Action was deferreed until the end of the pool season.

The mayor appointed Rodney Payne as councilman to fill the unexpired portion of John Tyler’s term.
