Raymond Bonin

October 27, 2022

Raymond Lee Bonin, the son of William and Emilie (Bruns) Bonin, was born on Dec. 27, 1946, in Davenport, Neb. He died Oct. 18, 2022, at Brodstone Healthcare at Superior, Neb., surrounded by his family at the age of 75 years, 9 months, 21 days.

Raymond attended Kiowa Lutheran school and Davenport High School. He worked at various farm jobs in Thayer and Nuckolls counties and also in Grafton. For one year he worked on a ranch at Campbell.

He married Cheryl Ruth Baker on Jan. 2, 1977, at Geneva, Neb. This union was blessed with three children: Robert, Crystal and Leanna.

Raymond and Cheryl purchased an acreage in Thayer County in 1993. They raised their children, pigs, cows, sheep, goats and had a USDA kennel for several years. The kennel was a combined effort between them. He wanted hunting dogs and she wanted Old English Sheepdogs. They got both. When retirement came, the move was made to Nelson.

Ray took pride in maintaining the yard. The town people complimented him on how nice it looked which meant a lot to him. He enjoyed sitting on the front deck in the evenings watching deer graze on the field across from the house and waving as cars drove by. He also enjoyed fishing, especially for catfish.

He had a hobby stock race car No. 69, where he devoted a whole summer of weekends to this with an eighth place season finish trophy. This was accomplished despite falling from a grain bin and breaking his heel. He was close with his brother, Elmer. They shared many weekends working on cars or helping out where ever they were needed.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Elmer (Faye) Bonin; and sister-in-law, Delores Bonin.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl of Nelson; his son, Robert of Plymouth, Neb .; daughters Crystal (Cody) Wyatt of Superior, Neb., and Leanna (Adam) Cotton of Red Cloud, Neb .; three grandchildren: Cooper Bonin, and Lily and Cady Wyatt; siblings: Clarence Bonin of Westminster, Calif .; Dorothy (LaVerne) Bundy of Davenport, Neb .; Lawrence (Judy) Bonin of Maxwell, Neb .; Kenneth Bonin of Davenport, Neb. and Martin Bonin of Holstein, Neb .; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

His funeral was at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Salem Lutheran Church, near Superior with Pastor Ethan Feistner officiating.

Recorded selections were "So God Made a Farmer," "You Can Let Go" and "Thank God I'm a Country Boy."

Honorary pallbearers were Cooper Bonin, Lily Wyatt and Cady Wyatt.

Memorials may go to the family.
