  • County Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|May 11, 2023

Some may not remember the importance that May 8 has for this country, but hopefully some will remember and be ever so thankful. It was a different time for the United States of America 78 years ago. WWII had been going on since Sept. 1, 1939, with Nazi Germany invading and taking over several counties, killing, looting and causing atrocities. On Dec. 7, 1941, the United States entered WWII after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Young men from the farming communities, men in the cities and some women left their homes and families to serve...

  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|May 11, 2023

After the excitement of graduation, at least one graduate's family sought /the solace of the Republican River. Though the drought has reduced the stream flow and made spring canoeing and kayaking difficult if not impossible, I understand the water was warm and the family found the quietness of the river to be refreshing. The first thing I would like to point out is that every belief system in the world (including atheism) claims to be exclusively true. The atheist who asked this qu...

  • Puffs

    Allen Ostdiek|May 11, 2023

Technology . . . It is either a “God-send” or the demon from hell. I contend that it is great as long as it works. It has become so common place that we all rely on it without even knowing it. Since most of Nebraska is experiencing a pretty severe drought, I find myself looking at the radar from the Weather Service more and more. More than once this year I’ve heard others make a remark similar to what I’m seeing. That is: “the storms or rain events seem to be coming right at us, but then they split and go north or south of us.” We know this b...

  • Love my crazy life

    Teraesa Bruce|May 11, 2023

The hubby has been home for two weeks now, recovering from parathyroid surgery. I’m proud to say I haven’t killed him yet. We still have a week to go, so time will tell. I’ve been working on getting the pool up and going for the upcoming season, along with much help from my assistant manager and lifeguards. It’s been a chore. I have a love-hate relationship with the big beautiful tree on the west side of the pool. It...
