This month of May is living up to its name. It “May” be cold. It “May” be hot. It “May” rain and then again it “May” not. We never know what “May” may be. It has also been a May like no other May before. Because of the COVID-19, the school year ended without last day of school activities. There will be no high school senior trips; no high school track meets held; no high school graduation ceremonies held as usual; no grade school class trips. May baseball and softball starting games will not be held. Class reunions and alumni activities usually held in May will be delayed a year. A May wedding will be downsized or postponed.

May was always important to my family. My parent’s wedding anniversary was May 3. My mother’s birthday was May 10, and of course there is Mother’s Day celebrated this month. With my father, four uncles and a grandfather all veterans, Memorial Day is an important day in May.

Here’s hoping that next year’s May will be back to normal.

Activity at our birdfeeders is hopping. Four feeders are kept filled with black sunflower seeds. Birds have been flocking to them to get their fill. Some birds are social and remain perched on the feeder as numerous others come and go visiting the feeders. Others not so social fly away from the feeders when new birds arrive. Some are beautiful singers and others just let out a chirp or “Kaw.”

There are goldfinches with their bright yellow and black feathers and the house finches that show red and light brown feathers. Both are singers. The red cardinals are eye catching. There are the cedar waxwings and the numerous sparrows coming in and out. Then the pushy blue jay flies in and all the other birds seem to scatter. The woodpecker flies to his favorite feeder which he can comfortably perch on but doesn’t stay for long.

I like to watch the birds and enjoy listening to their songs. How they can brighten up a day. I just have to keep their feeders full.
