L-N teachers share why they love public schools and their jobs

Lawrence-Nelson teachers told why they find teaching rewarding. Teachers get to see their students excel in the classroom and in life. Kellie Feistner said, “I worked with two brothers who were both on the autism spectrum. I worked in a high school at the time. One boy loved to draw and the other one was interested in ceramics. I supported both of them in art class. It was really cool to see their creativity come out.

“After they were out of high school I was shopping one day and went into a store that sold items made by a local disabilities support group. I saw several pieces created by the two brothers. I was able to purchase something each of them had made. Because of the opportunities they were given in school, they were able to create and sell items they were proud of.”

Randi Fox, second grade teacher, said, “I have done a lot of races with students. When I race them, I walk around the classroom while they solve a problem. The challenge is to get the problem solved before I walk back to their desk. I know my students have the confidence and ability to do work but sometimes they need a challenge. It always seems like once I start the challenge, they realize their ability and start flying through their work.”
