Nelson lifeguards get pool ready for season

Nelson lifeguards get pool ready for 2021 season

Emily Miller and McKenzie Ostdiek touch up the edging in the hallways and locker rooms at the Nelson pool. The white paint brightens up the area and gives it a nice fresh look.

Many folks have fond memories of summers at the community pool. For many youths, being a lifeguard is their first job. This year the community of Nelson has a large group of teenagers working on getting the pool open. Since the pool was closed for the 2020 season, pool employees have many items to check off the "to do" list before the opening of the new season.

Elizabeth Tillmans and Haley Williams volunteered to help with the painting at the Municipal pool in Nelson this past week. Elizabeth, attends Hastings College and Haley attends CCC in Hastings and are home for the summer.

Painting has been at the top of that list. The pool house is getting a fresh coat of paint inside and out. It is white with black trim. The benches will be painted in a light grey but will have to be painted over time. The outside of the building is a priority at this time. The inside of the pool house will be touched up on rainy days or during the fair when the pool typically closes early. There are also plans for new signage or a mural on the front of the building.

The lifeguards have been busy working on earning their certification the past week. This year is different than years past as all of the bookwork has been online. The online version has proven to be a bit of a challenge, as many guards have had to start over because the website did not save their work. Fingers crossed it will work better in the future. The practical portion of the class begins on Tuesday.

Things seem to be coming together well. Managers are waiting for another inspection from the state and the water to warm before they announce the official opening day for the 2021 pool season.
