Presenting biblical answers to tough questions

Q: Is America a Christian Nation?

A: I have read many works on the founding fathers and the birth of our nation, along with documents written by the founders during that period. The conclusion I have reached personally is the Christian worldview was indeed one of the principal influences on the founding fathers as they forged the framework of this country. I am as sure of the Christian basis for their decisions as I am about anything in secular history.

Let me give you an example of this influence; the founders designed the structure of our government on the basis of the Christian doctrine of human depravity. Because they believed that no one is perfect they realized no one person can be trusted with absolute authority. This is why they vested power in a constitution rather than a monarch and split the powers of government into three branches (taking a hint from Isaiah 33:22). They also devised checks and balances so that no one branch could take control.

Another example was the need they saw to teach future generations proper religious and moral truths so they could function as moral citizens (Read the Northwest Ordinance, section 14, article 3; also paragraph 27 of George Washington’s farewell address). This desire to give future generations a sound religious, ethical and practical foundation was the basis for their encouragement of education.

In short, the founding fathers based the laws of this nation on exceedingly noble and lofty ideals. Ideals taken largely from Christian thinkers of their day and drawn ultimately from the pages of Scripture. In the times and situations where our nation has lived up to those principles, we have seen a growth of peace, justice, and prosperity. In the times and situations where we have departed from those principles (such as the institution of slavery, mistreatment of Native Americans and our present fascination with postmodern and atheistic philosophies) there has been a growth of dysfunction, injustice, and chaos. It is not so much about being a Christian nation; it is about governing according to truth, righteousness and justice.
