A firey semi-truck crash near Cowles late Friday morning took the life of a 62-year-old truck driver.

The accident happened three miles north of the state spur which leads from Highway 281 to the Webster County community of Cowles.

Three semi-trailer trucks were southbound on Highway 281. The driver of the first truck apparently had missed a turn and slowed. The driver of the second truck passed the truck without incident. The first truck then attempted to make a U-turn and collided with the third truck.

The driver of the first truck died at the accident scene. The third driver escaped serious injury.

A northbound observer told The Express she was unaware of what was happening until the truck went into the ditch and spilled its load.

She reported the truck was destroyed by fire.
