Jewell County Fair begins this week

It is once again time for the Jewell County Fair in Mankato. Fair activities for 4-H and FFA members, Scouts, and open class exhibitors began on Wednesday, July 5, at the Mankato Community Building with judging of foods, clothing, quilts and photography. The 4-H food stand will be open starting today (Thursday).

Open class exhibitors could register exhibits from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, and then today (Thursday morning), all exhibitors can register their items from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Judging will be held throughout the morning hours. Tonight, livestock will be checked in from 7 to 9 p.m.

The 4-H horse show begins at 8 a.m. Friday. Poultry, rabbit and pet judging will start at 12:30 with the beef show starting at 4:30 p.m. Swine judging followed by sheep and goats will be on Saturday morning starting at 8 a.m. A livestock judging contest for county 4-H and FFA members will begin at 12:30.

Friday evening will showcase a new event at the fair, team goat roping. There will be two divisions, and teams of two, a header and a heeler, are welcome to sign up by 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Ropes will be provided. There will also be a ranch trail course and 4-H speed events after the goat roping. The evening's activities will be under the new arena lights erected by Rolling Hills Electric and wired byWhite Rock Electric. The lights were funded in part by a Jewell County Community Development Grant.

Saturday late afternoon and evening is the popular Family Fun Night at the Fair. From 4 to 7 p.m., bouncy houses will be available for children, the catch-an-animal contest will begin at 4:30, the pedal pull will start at 5 p.m. with registration due by 4:15 p.m. Mutton bustin' registration will be in the late afternoon and the show will begin at 7 p.m. Steer riding, 14 to 17 year old bull riding and No Excuses bull riding will follow. Bull riders from South Dakota, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma have registered for this year's bull riding so there is sure to be excitement. The evening will conclude with music by Wes Cossman and a beer garden run by Lovewell Marina. During the early evening events, snow cones, ice cream treats and kettle corn stands will be open on the premises.

Sunday the fair concludes with Round Robin showmanship at 12:30, and the annual livestock auction will start at 6 p.m. at Mankato Livestock Inc.'s air conditioned facility. A sack lunch supper will be available starting at 5 p.m. in the Livestock Café.

The Jewell County Fair Board member have spent many hours preparing for this year's fair and encourage everyone to come to the fair to support the 4-H and FFA members and watch the many events being offered at no cost to citizens.
