  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Oct 12, 2023

It is with a heavy heart that I write this week’s Country Roads as hearing and seeing all that is currently happening in Israel is so terrible. Prayers are with Israel and its people. My mind goes back to thoughts I shared a few months ago with a friend that I grew up with and attended school with. We both shared we were so thankful for God placing us in the country where we were born, the community and time we grew up in, and with the parents and grandparents we had. Our country has been blessed during its almost 250 years since the United S...

  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Oct 12, 2023

In last week's Notebook, I wrote about spelling. I thought the correct spelling was syphon but my word processing program's spell checker changed it to siphon and the dictionary agreed. After reading last week's Notebook entry, a faithful reader and former resident of Superior, Arlen Sealock, shared a story regarding the correct spelling of the word. His father, Elmer Sealock, operated the Superior Truck Line. Arlen's story follows: The agency which regulated truck lines published a tariff book...

  • Start Your Engine

    Richard L. Schmeling|Oct 12, 2023

During my lifetime the simple matter of starting the engine on your car has undergone a big change. The 1941 Chevrolet which took my family through World War II and beyond used a starter pedal. On the floorboard of the car from left to right were (1) dimmer switch foot pedal to switch headlights from high beam to low beam, (2) a clutch pedal which had to be depressed to shift gears, (3) the footbrake pedal, (4) the throttle and (5) farthest to the right, the start pedal. The 1937 Ford which my father brought as a second car had a push button...

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    Oct 12, 2023

Q: This may be a long shot, but does the Bible have anything to say about the immigrants crossing our southern border or the best way to handle the situation? A: While the basic understanding of Christian morality, such as the golden rule (Matthew 7:12), the ten commandments (Exodus 20:1-17), and virtues like humility, diligence and honesty serve to answer problems of personal life, issues like a government’s response to immigration are more far-reaching and complex. In order to find the best solution to such an issue the Bible would point u...

  • Seniors taking martial arts class

    Oct 12, 2023

Beware! Old people are practicing martial arts. In this class, though, instead of a "back hand strike" they "wave hands like clouds," or instead of "punch power," they do "fair lady works the shuttles," and instead of "knife hand strike" they "hold the ball," an imaginary one. These are names of strike and movement positions in Kung Fu and Tai Chi. Their goal is not to arm themselves in self-defense against an enemy attack, although they could, but against the intrusive effects on aging. These...
