A "Sewing Day" tradition at Sacred Heart parish

A "Sewing Day" tradition in Lawrence

March 31, 2022

The Sacred Heart Sewing Circle for the Sacred Heart Catholic parish in Lawrence was organized in 1916 (Yes, 106 years ago). Since that time, thousands of quilts have been put together and quilted by the women of Sacred Heart parish with some help from women outside of the parish on occasion.

Usually on one day of the year, the group invites all women of the parish to help in a "Sewing Day." On this occasion they not only complete quilts of all kinds, but also assist in many other endeavors to assist in the Corporal Works of Mercy for citizens of Nebraska and other places. At one time, the group cut and wrapped bandages for the military. Sewing Day participants for 2022 are shown above. They included (from left, back row) Connie Reiman, Mary Schutte, Carla Kohmetscher, Amy Brockman, Jeaninne Schendt, Linda Kohmetscher, Lois Ostdiek, Becky Miller, Brenda Janda, Eileen Mazour, Karen Faimon, Dawn Theer. (front, row) Doris Rempe, Marilyn Svoboda, Sheri Buescher, Kay Theer, Donna Himmelberg, Bonnie Himmelberg, Bonnie Himmelberg, Carolyn Kohmetscher; Not pictured is Barb Janda as she was the photographer.
