Tuesday morning, Superior High School students gathered in the performance gymnasium for the annual National Honor Society Induction Ceremony.

Supt. John Whetzal welcomed the audience.

Students are voted into the National Honor Society by the secondary staff. To be eligible , student must have at least an 85 percent cumulative grade point average. In addition to scholarship, students mu have demonstrated character, leadership and service, 15 percent of the students in the junior and senor class per year can be voted into the society.

One of the objectives of the each year's honor students hope to induce others to seek good scholarly habits, to take part in worth service and to lead forward in all things that advance the welfare of the school. The flaming torch is the emblem of the purposes of the organization, to bear forward the searching light of truth, to lead that other may follow in the light, to keep burning in Superior High School a high ambition for the enduring value of life and to serve in consideration of others.

After the introduction, current honor society members moved into the audience and sought out the new members.

Current members highlighted the ideals of the society by lighting a candles and reading a paragraph about scholarship, character, leadership and service.

Scholarship: May the standard of scholarship in Superior High School grow ever high. A high standard of scholarship is the first aim of the society. We believe that nothing so much as an earnest endeavor to learn opens the way to the knowledge and wisdom of others, to an understanding and appreciation of the efforts, the mistakes, the joys and the sorrows of mankind. Excellence has been increased, but also that the individual has endeavored to make the most of the opportunities at hand.

Character: May its radiance illuminate good qualities in each one of us. Character is the force in one person that distinguishes them from others. It gives them individuality and personality. When it is good, it must arise from high ideals, clean living and clean thinking. Character is the power that makes great people famous because in the end they are judges by what they are more than by what they have done. Character is the foundation for leadership, scholarship and service.

Leadership: May the ability to lead others continue to manifest itself in Superior High School. Leadership in its highest sense is not simply an outgrowth of vigorous and pleasing personality. Leadership, in order to benefit mankind, must proceed from unselfish motives, from strong character, and from a self-informed mind. It requires constant denial of self, a genuine affection for mankind and an abiding trust in God. A true leader is marked by self-confident and poise, both of which are born of experience, knowledge and an understanding of men.

Service: May the willingness to serve others be ever present in our hearts. Scholarship, character and leadership would be incomplete without service. To attain the fullest life one cannot live for himself alone. Good scholarship, fine character, inspiring leadership may each find itself lacking some small part if to itself is not added to service for his fellow man. To serve is to work, to help, to use one's talents, not for himself alone but for others as well.

After the new members had heard the ideals of the society, they were then asked to pledge to uphold the society's ideal.

The parents of each new member were then invited to present National Society Honor pins to their son or daughter.
