  • Country Roads

    Dec 22, 2022

My thoughts are floating back to Christmas Past, as it would be termed in The Christmas Carol. It happened while checking out a family photo I happened upon that was probably taken in December of 1957 in our family farmhouse, as my baby sister, Gayla, looks in the photo to be not quite a year old. My father, Gerald Boyles, is dressed in a stylish dress jacket, so I'm guessing it was Christmas Eve, following our country church's Christmas program. For many years, the program was held Christmas...

  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Dec 22, 2022

Newspapers regularly publish stories about unexpected finds. At this writing, we are preparing a story about the unexpected find of a more than 100-year-old missionary society minute book. Sometimes the stories involve Indian relics, finds in what apparently were once trash dumps or archeological discoveries like the mastodons of Jewell County and the creatures near Angus. Earlier this fall, a Superior resident bought in a family Bible and a more than a century old medical book found as part of a furnace replacement project. The words of the...

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    Dec 22, 2022

Presenting biblical answers to tough questions Q: What do we know about the Christmas star? A: The term “star” in the Bible can refer to any small heavenly body. Shooting stars, planets and galaxies would have all been referred to as stars in biblical times, because they all look the same to the naked eye. The sun and moon would not have been thought of as stars, even though we now know that the sun is a kind of star, it wasn’t called a star in Bible times. So then, when the magi claimed to have seen the star of the newborn king of the Jews,...

  •  Christmas: The Hope of The World

    Clint Decker|Dec 22, 2022

On the eve of history's first Christmas, it was a dark time for the Jewish people. Their land was occupied by the Roman Empire. The Lord God had not spoken to them for hundreds of years. Heaven's voice was silent. Their religious texts spoke of prophecies about a King that would rise up from among them. They anticipated this King, that He would be their deliverer from Roman rule. How would darkness be turned to light? How would despair be turned to hope? In approximately 4 B.C. a divine...

  • Superior City Council organizes for 2023

    Dec 22, 2022

It’s a new era for the Superior City Council but pretty much the status quo is expected to continue. After being postponed for a week because of a lack of a quorum, the council met Monday night and reorganized. The meeting opened with the old council in place to finish up any pending business. Items of old business included approving December claims, approving the minutes from the Nov. 28 council meeting and accepting the November treasurer’s report. Then it was time for the old governing body to adjourn sine die. But before that motion was...

  • Early Christmas trees in Jewell County

    Kerma Crouse|Dec 22, 2022

In 1621, following the first Thanksgiving, there were no Christmas traditions in what would become the United States. Neither the Puritans nor the Pilgrims observed or celebrated Christmas. In fact in 1659, one could be fined for hanging a decoration or having anything other than a church service related to Christmas. It was not until 1870 that Christmas was to become a legal holiday in the United States. 1870 was also the first year Christmas was celebrated by the pioneer settlers in Jewell County. In July of 1870, two hundred five persons...
