    South Heartland District Health Department (SHDHD) officials said the district will start offering COVID-19 vaccine to priority age groups in Phase 1B as soon as vaccine is available.     Something that looked nearly impossible in 2012 is about to take a step closer to reality. This week the Superior auditorium committee is expected to select a contractor to install a heating and cooling system in the auditorium space, entryway, balcony and second floor promenade. The contractor has indicated he expects to begin work in mid-February and complete work by May 1.   • Fiery crash claims life of Deshler man; woman trapped

    A Deshler resident, Samuel Lindley was killed in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 136 northeast of Fairbury last Wednesday. At about 7 p.m. the Jefferson County communications center reced a report of an automobile on fire near 571st Avenue and Highway 136. Motorists passing the accident scene were able to remove a trapped woman from one of the vehicles.   • Voters being asked to approve bonds for Thayer Central

    For Nuckolls County voters living in the Thayer Central School district, official notice of an uncoming bond election is published in this issue of The Superior Express. Voters will be asked to express their support or opposition to the proposed issuance of $5.275 million worth of bonds. If the measure passes and the bonds are issued, they are to be repaid in 15 years. Ballots will be mailed to registered voters between Feb. 17 and 26.   • Elks receive grant for COVID supplies

    The Superior Elks Lodge is helping communities and essential workers cope with COVID. The lodge members applied for and received grants to purchase and donate hand sanitizer, face masks and gloves. The Elks will spend an estimated $900 to purchase three-layer facial masks with elastic ear loops; $775 worth of gloves; and $350 for 8-ounce bottles of hand sanitizer.     On Monday, Jewell County experienced a full day of heavy snowfall. Throughout the day business were shoveling sidewalks so customers could still get in. School was cancelled at Rock Hills for Monday and Tuesday. Monday evening, the Mankato City trucks were clearing the streets so residents would be able to travel safely throughout town.     The third annual Bushy Nutz Squirrel Hunt was held at the Nuckolls County Fairgrounds Saturday. Teams of two registered for the event the day before, with a bag limit of five squirrels per team. The squirrels are weighed and measured. The top five are awarded prizes. There is also a Nut and Chatter prize awarded for the largest male.
