    Gloria Schlaefli|Feb 23, 2023

There is a saying “Behind every great man is a great woman.” I’m sure every farm wife in America would agree with that statement. Though the saying was made in the 19th century, it rings true in today’s society as well as long before the 19th century. As we think of President George Washington’s birthday on Feb. 22, thoughts of his great lady go toward the first First Lady Martha (Dandridge) Curtis-Washington. She was married to her first husband, Mr. Curtis, when she was 18 years old. She was ahead of her time, as unlike most girls of that t...

  • Puffs

    Allen Ostdiek|Feb 23, 2023

Sorry folks for missing last week. I was a bit under the weather and I’ll try to relate what happened to some extent. The week did, however, give me a little time for reflection. A O Over the years I’ve been amazed at the search for happiness from us humans. So very often the search came down to the idea that if “only I could accomplish (or obtain) this particular thing, I’d be happy.” How many times did a person accomplish that goal, but still was unhappy? I came to the conclusion many years ago that happiness is not a destination (such as...

  • Love my crazy life

    Teraesa Bruce|Feb 23, 2023

By Teraesa Bruce We started working on our old house and met the new neighbors to the north. They are nice folks. Pam even brought me flowers for Valentine’s Day. Her son, Kenny, has been helping George get the ancient appliances out of the basement. There is a washer, dryer, furnace and two ringer washers, none of which fit up the stairwell, so there is no telling how long they have been there. We have big plans for the little house and hope to give the ol’ gal a new lease on life. The idea is to sell her to help fund our progress in the mon...

  • Lincoln's Birthday

    Nancy Stafford|Feb 23, 2023

February 12 is Lincoln’s birthday and February 22 is Washington’s. When I was in school, these two days were celebrated separately on the days of their birth. The school halls and classrooms were decorated with silhouettes of the two honorees. We made or colored top hats for Lincoln and it was not unusual to see them sported in the halls. For Washington there was a cherry pie or cobbler for dessert in remembrance of the “I will not tell a lie” tale. Speeches were made starting with “The Gettysburg Address.” There was a recounting of Washingt...

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    Feb 23, 2023

Q: What’s the point of getting baptized? What is it for? A: Different churches and denominations will have different perspectives of the purpose of baptism, and most sincerely believe their perspective is the one that most closely matches the perspective of Scripture. Part of the reason for this diversity is the range of Scriptures that pertain to the subject. When examined out of context, the different verses can seem to present contradictory views (compare I Corinthians 1:14-17 with Acts 2:38 for one example). While it is easy to focus on t...

  • Editor's notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Feb 23, 2023

No doubt about it, we live in the Central Flyway. Walking home for lunch, I observed a confused skein of what sounded like snow geese flying over Superior. They must have just gotten up from a nearby river bottom field for they had not settled into a structured formation. From my position, their order resembled a flock of sparrows. Snow geese are noisy creatures. Living in town, I don’t hear the coyotes howl like I did while making my home on Blauvelt’s Hill. But with snow geese that is not true. This area was part of their flight plan whe...

  • Eagles are hard to spot

    Feb 23, 2023

We are not sure if this eagle was ashamed to eat in public or if it was saving the fish for a later snack but the bird was holding a small fish in a talon when Mary Utecht snapped this picture at Lovewell Lake on Monday. There seem to be plenty of snow geese in the area this month but eagles are hard to spot....
